Prominent Scholar Professor Usman Ali Khan Passes Away

Gilgit-Baltistan‘s prominent scholar, historian and educationist Usman Ali Khan has passed away after a brief illness. The 86-year old scholar was admitted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Rawalpindi where he breathed his last. He is the author of many history related books like The Doleful Story of Gilgit, Shinalogy, Tribes of the Karakoram, Jilwa-e-Karakoram and Independence of Gilgit, etc. He was the son of Mohammad Yousuf, one of Gilgit’s earliest formal teachers.

He has been associated with education department under different positions for 39 years before his retirement. He started his career as a teacher at Government High School Number 1 in Gilgit for eleven years before being appointed the Inspector Schools. Later he was promoted as District Inspector Schools. He had also served as a principal in Hunza, Skardu and Jutial, Gilgit.

In 2014, Professor Usman Ali Khan was featured on the cover of Educure’s third edition in the Urdu section. His interview gives a brief account of his educational and literary journey.

He will be laid to rest in his hometown of Gilgit.
